This year has been extremely
satisfying for Red Hughs in terms of underage
success and club development.
Senior &
Reserve Teams
Last January saw the appointments
of Donal Reid, Cathal
Doherty as managers of these teams and they were ably assisted by Eamon Kelly & John Sweeney. Naomh Padraig,
Muff were our opponents in the preliminary round
of the Junior A Championship and they edged us out over two games.
The team were gutted with this exit
as they lost the first game to a last minute point and Naomh
Padraig claimed a draw in the second after snatching a point with the last
kick of the game.
At the time of going to print we
are 2nd place in the league but with a number of teams having
games in hand our fate is unknown.
The reserves competed very well in
the league and were quite a formidable force,
Robert Emmets put us out of the Junior B Championship over two legs.
U21’s
Our U21 team contested
a great game of football with Carndonagh when
they hosted the Inishowen side on a dreary
October day at Monellan Park. It is unfortunate that the competition
took so long to get underway with both teams having a lot of players absent
through college commitments. It took
a while for the home team to get going but they put Carn
to the pin of their collar. There
were excellent performances all around the field and it bodes well for the
future.
U18’s by Martin Wilson
The minors finished
3rd in their league. In the 2 games they were defeated in there was only a
kick of a ball in it. They defeated Carn, Buncrana and N. Colmcille. In
the championship they defeated Burt, Eunans and Malin to reach the northern board final against Convoy.
A below par performance saw a 2 point defeat. In the All County Championship semi-final
the lads played against Dungloe and were unlucky
on the day and will again be disappointed with the result.
Having to play 13 a
side did not help matters. Something for the powers that be to look into
for the future of Donegal football!! All in all this was a terrific year
for Red Hughs minors. The panel of 20 stuck
together from start to finish this gives a degree for optimism for the
senior setup next year.

U16’s by Stephen Gallagher
The under 16 team under the guidance of Stephen Gallagher, Micheal Shiels & Kieran
Sharkey got their league campaign of to a slow start. Losing their first
two games to Glenfin and Urris
respectively. It was a very tight league with teams winning and losing
games all the way through. Wins against Robert Emmetts,
Malin & Convoy helped the team to finnish joint second with Malin.
That was good enough to qualify for the Shield semi-final against Downings winning 1-14 to 2-2. Gweedore
were the opponents in the final and the Red Hughs
lads proved too strong and claimed an impressive victory.
The team also competed in the Division one championship losing out
in the first round to Termon by a single point.
This team have a lot of promise and nurtured properly no doubt they will
bring success to the club in the future.
Well done to Gary Kelly, Colm Melaugh & Ronan Gallen
who represented the club in the under 16 county team and to the players and
everyone involved with the team this year.
U14’s by Joe Carlin
This was a challenging
year for the under 14 team as it was their first time to play at Division 1
level. Except for the two very
strong teams of St. Eunans and Gweedore they competed very well against the other
opposition, coming out winners on some occasions and just beaten by the
narrowest of margins on others. At the end of their league campaign they
played Buncrana in the Division 1 shield final
and were beaten by just 1 point.
Their division 2 championship campaign got off
to a great start with victory over a very strong Letterkenny
Gaels team who had defeated them earlier in the year in the Feile competition. They reached the regional final and
reluctantly travelled to Muff to play Carndonagh
as this was the second time they had been asked to travel to Inishowen to play an Inishowen
team in a final. Unfortunately they were defeated, but only by 2 points after
finishing the stronger of the two teams. They then travelled to Glenties to play Na Rossa
(Winners of Southern Regional final) on this occasion they ran out winners
despite what seemed an unfair disadvantage travel wise.
The County under 14 final was against Carndonagh and to the dismay of the team, was once
again fixed for Muff. Despite a delay in the playing date due to assurances
from the County Board that the game would be played in a more neutral
venue, the team had once again to travel to Muff. Carndonagh won
the game by 3 points. Overall it was a good year for the team despite
losing 3 finals.
U13’s by Paul Byrne
Our u13’s playing managed by Paul
Byrne and Damien Wilson started off the year with victories over
Robert Emmets & Lifford but they were
defeated in their next three games, however they went on to play Letterkenny Gaels in the Plate semi-final, Red Hugh’s
ran out easy winners 14-15 to 1-0 in the Cross. The Plate final saw Red
Hugh’s take on Milford. After a
great performance, the lads went on to win 5-9 to 1-4. It was a very productive year for this
age group and it was an added bonus to add silverware to the cabinet.
U12, U10 & U8
Go-Games
Well done to our u12,
u10 & u8, A and B teams who competed in go-games for this first time
this summer, with great fun being had by all. Great credit to Joe Gallen,
Lyndon Gillespie, Tony Gallagher, Liam Doherty & Bernard Devine who put
in fantastic work with these groups since last November right up until
August. Well done to Conor Gallagher who represented the club at the U12
skills competition in Convoy.
Senior Ladies by Kathy Kelly
Our senior ladies started their second
season in the Junior League under the management of Gerard Mc Colgan and Gerard Melaugh. They
finished mid-table in the league after some very closely fought battles,
the management can be proud of the effort, determination and team spirit
shown by the girls, and with an ever increasing panel coming through from
underage they will no doubt keep the momentum going in the fourth coming
season.
Underage by Kathy Kelly
Our underage girls have progressed well over the past number of years,
starting out under the guidance of Maura Mc Crudden, Kate Bradley and Collette Callaghan. There are
60 underage girls in the club at present. Our club was one of the hosts of
the u14 County Feile and would like to thank all
who helped out on the day.
U16
Girls
by Maura McCrudden
The under 16s girls started training in March with under 14s and
under 16s training together. This season has seen great improvements in the
team’s performance from all the under 16s girls which had some u14s players
as well. They played 4 league
matches with some great football being played but the results were
unfortunate. Good luck to the girls
moving up to the minor team and the girls that are playing with senior
ladies next year again.
Thanks to the girls for all their effort during the year and the
coaches of the under 14s team for their help during the year and under 16s
coaches of Elaine Melaugh, Helen Dolan and Maura Mc Crudden
U14s by Alice Doherty
The u14s had an enjoyable year under
the management of Alice Doherty, assisted by Marie Mc
Colgan & Kathy Kelly. They had six games and
played their hearts out in every game and gave their all against very
strong opposition. Training sessions were well attended, with a lot of hard
work and fun had by all.
Congratulations to Cliondha
Muldoon who was picked for the u14 Donegal Girls team.
Thanks to Bernard Devine Minor Board Chairman for all his
help throughout the year.
U12s by Kathy Kelly
The u12s are managed by Kate Bradley
and assisted by Kathy Kelly. The girls played a series of games in the U12
Go Games Blitz. The girls played some great football, had lots of fun and
picked up lots of new skills on their travels. The girls also played Castlederg
in two friendly games during the summer.
Anna Carlin an u12 and u14 player was drawn out to represent
the club in Croke Park on Ladies All-Ireland
Final Day, at the half time blitz games, a very proud day for Anna and the
club.
Club Development Draw
The Club had a very successful
Development Draw which ran throughout the summer. Many thanks to the generous people from
every part of the county and beyond who purchased tickets, for the
fantastic support of our sponsors and thanks must go to the sellers who put
in a Trojan amount of work and co-ordinator Andy Doherty.
Passing of President,
Wee Andy Doherty
In December 2009 our Honorary
President Andy Doherty sadly passed away. He was truly missed throughout
the year. May he rest in peace. The Club
would like to offer our condolences to all families in the parish who lost
loved ones throughout the year.
