Red
Hughs................. 2-6
Buncrana................... 4-7
By Rory Harvey at Pairc Naomh Colmcille
Red Hughs
U14 team put up a spirited performance against hot favourites Buncrana on a damp Wednesday evening in Newtown. It
could be argued that for the majority of the game, Hughs
were the better team but their lack of composure proved to be the telling
factor.
After the throw-in,
nerves were evident from both teams. Red Hughs
got the first 2 scores, both from the boot of the athletic Matthew
Carlin. It was end to end stuff throughout but Buncrana were a lot more clinical in front of the posts
and edged into a 5-2 lead. Red Hughs
were dealt a cruel blow as the Inishowen boys
snatched a goal, when after a scurry the ball was toe poked to the net and
before the half was out another goal was leaked.
After the break the odds
were firmly stacked against the Cross boys, to their credit they continued
to believe. Martin Byrne gathered the ball on the ’45 and took
off on a rampage for goal, after evading three markers he smashed the ball
to the roof of the net. His wonder goal put a spring back into
the step of Joe Carlin’s charges. As the game entered the last 5
minutes time was running out for Red Hughs,
Justin McBride gathered the ball and fisted it into the path of sub Shane McGuire. He
fisted the ball to the roof of the net in a very clever fashion. Matthew
Carlin added another point to leave a goal between the teams. It
was Buncrana who had the last say when their
number 10 clipped over the final point of the game.
Hard luck to the boys who
did themselves proud in the final, next up is the Division 2 Championship
against Letterkenny Gaels on the 18th of
August.
